The Wackness

I checked out a film today called 'The Wackness'. I saw previews of it prior to its release around a year ago, but never got around to checking it out (although it looked like a good movie). So I rented it at blockbuster and popped it in. The movie was good although i walked away wondering what the real point of the movie was. Was it to teach us about heartbreak? Or was it about selling drugs? Making friends? Learning lessons from unexpected people? Or all of the above?

Even though the movie had a questionable theme, it was good. Amazing soundtrack and well filmed. From the lighting effects to the imagery the movie was solid. The cast was also golden. I highly recommend you rent this movie.

Next movie to watch: Waltz with Bashir

Since the original Tron, I've been fiending for some more lightcycles and more ball games. Finally Tron 2 is coming out to fulfill that need. Best of all it comes with a score made completely by Daft Punk. Oh, and it's in 3D.

The trailer posted is just so its easily watched on my blog, but this site has a better quality trailer: HERE

Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince

So I got a chance to see the new Harry Potter movie last night. I actually haven't seen the last two films, but it was a really good film. In terms of story, It was intriguing. As you would guess its not much of a jump into it without prior knowledge kinda movie, but if you have a fourth of a brain you could probably get the gist. The film's cinematography was brilliant. Scenes where Harry's silhouette fades in with the background making it look like a Harry Potter fan's geekgasm desktop, to Dumbledore's memory scene's. The film was made to look darker and more dramatic, and it worked great. Scene's of Tom Riddle as a kid blew my mind.

The action was great. I'm glad it wasn't an action porn like Transformers, but not a borefest like other summer films tend to be. Again, for the action, the effects are awesome. Small fight scenes to action moments like running through a corn field is fast, loud, and extremely entertaining like a movie should be. Even the quiditch try-outs were great.

Another thing about Harry Potter movies is the score. The first three films had an amazing score and this one did not disappoint. It was a very well placed, and as far as i can tell was flawless. The only bad thing i had to say was there could have been an ending. I know it was a book, but i dont really read Harry Potter books, so i can careless about the readers feelings. Cut it off at a cool point, Like where Harry and Dumbledore teleport out of the school, And keep viewers who haven't read the book on the line and you A.) get them to pick up a book, or B.) have them sitting at the midnight showing at the next movie.

Overall the movie was good. Rottentomatoes gave them an 88%, I give them an 85%. A Solid summer movie that you can talk about or a week or two.

Pitchfork.com's Review of "Shining Down" Inpromtu Rebuttal

First, Chillin' is a good track. I'm already questioning the credibility of the Pitchfork.com staff. Next they go on to say that Shining Down is a "bland refix" of Superstar. I don't know what they were listening to, but i guess any song featuring Matthew Santos is a bland refix of Superstar, which in turn is a bland refix of Heard 'em Say. If they were mad that Matt Santos sounded like Adam Lavine, i want to see how they talk about some of these 2000 rappers that all sound alike. These are the same people who probably say "Asher Roth sounds like Eminem because they have the same skin tone and both rap."

Pitchfork said the opening words( "Well, Well...") sounded like "a sad trombone, a la Debbie Downer." Pitchfork seems to have the intelligence of a person who should be watching Debbie Downer for picking out these bad lines to scrutinize. How you goin' tell me these lines aren't hitters (in context):

"No cowards, you only heard lions
Not a facade cherisher, I’d rather have the scars
I don’t idolize America, I’m dancing with the stars"

I agree its not his best work, but how are you going to say "it sounds like a guy who really wants to retire..." That's ridiculous. Pitchfork needs to cut it out.

Pitchfork.com's Review of "Shining Down"

"If summer is in fact hip-hop's most crucial season, 2009 is looking pretty rough so far. First Wale goes off and cheats on us with Lady Gaga, then the Thornton brothers hit us with a certified clunker, and now this? No wonder Lupe Fiasco was so pissed about the leak. Unfortunately, "Shining Down" is a bland refix of The Cool's first single "Superstar" also with Matthew Santos on chorus detail (who somehow doesn't seem to notice that this world probably doesn't need two Adam Levines). But this one retains none of "Superstar"'s wonderful cheekiness, opting for a doleful elaboration on nothing in particular. None of Lupe's effervescent wit or flow is present, setting the tone and pace for "Shining Down" by kicking off the first verse with a "Well, well" that actually sounds like a sad trombone, à la Debbie Downer. Certainly this gifted MC has to know that groaners like, "Your attention put back on the flow like the department of water" aren't going to fool us. The vague menace of the guitar loops and synths kind of reminds me of the politically-firebranded brilliance of earlier stuff like "American Terrorist", but it's too thin a commendation for something this rote. Lupe is starting to sound more like the guy who really wants to retire and less like the guy who just gets off on telling people he's going to."
